What are the Symptoms of a Failing Differential?

The Differential is an essential component of any Vehicle. It helps your car to turn corners, accelerate, and decelerate, and can be found in both Front-Wheel Drive and Rear-Wheel Drive vehicles. But what happens if your Differential Fails? There are a few telltale signs that point to a failing differential—let us take a look at what they are.

Noise One of the most common indicators of a failing Differential is noise. If you notice a loud grinding or clunking sound coming from the axle area while you’re driving, it could mean that there is an issue with the Differential system. These sounds usually occur when cornering or when accelerating and decelerating, so if you hear them only when performing these actions it could very well be an issue with the differential.

Vibrations

Another symptom of a failing Differential is vibration. Vibrations will usually occur during acceleration or when cornering, although they may also be present when driving in a straight line. If you feel vibrations emanating from the axle region, it’s likely that something is wrong with the differential system.

Leaks

Finally, if your Vehicle has been leaking oil from around the Axle area then this could also point to an issue with your car’s differential system. This is because one of the components of your differential system is an oil seal that keeps oil in and dirt out; if this seal becomes worn out or damaged then oil can leak out around the axle area.

A failing differential can cause major problems for your Vehicle, so it's important to make sure that yours is working properly at all times. If you notice any strange noises coming from the axle area, vibrations while cornering or accelerating/decelerating, or leaks around the axle region then these could all be indicators that something isn't quite right with your vehicle's differential system - get it checked out as soon as possible! Taking care of these issues early on can save you time and money down the road.
